Soft (Flush) Bindings

- Thesis and Dissertations

Soft (Flush) bindings - City Binders bookbindersSoft Binding specifications for Thesis and Dissertations may be written like this... "glue binding with cloth covering; lettered on the spine with Name Initials, Degree/Course, Year"; the lettering to read Up/down the spine. The specification may add that the book must be able to be "Free Standing".

City Binders bookbinders; Soft bindings are - usually glue bound with the exception of the paper is not "glue friendly" (ie. Coated papers, paper is too heavy, plastic or tracing paper etc), or the capacity of the book is too great (the thickness exceeds 30mm); in either case we will sew or mechanically bind, the pages. After this, thin boards are then attached to either side about 5mm away from the spine. Following on the Buckram cloth Soft binding covering is adhered to the book with the lettering reading Up/Down the spine. Finally the bound book has 1-2mm trimmed (Flush) off the openning 3 edges the book.

Soft Bindings for Universities and Colleges are sometimes termed "Temporary" bindings usually used for a ‘Viva’ exam or other pre exam requisite. Therefore, the longevity is not a main concern, only that the Soft binding will able to be read easily by examiners and tutors.

There have been a further University and College requirements that Soft bindings are able to be free standing (ie Soft bindings are able to stand up right on a bookshelf). We at City Binders bookbinders use a thin board under the Cloth (Buckram) covering to enable the Soft binding to be free-standing.
